Key Points
- Seven principles protect the places we love
- Desert soil crusts take decades to recover
- Pack out everything, including pet waste
- Leave rocks, plants and artifacts where you find them
Leave No Trace is a set of seven simple principles for enjoying the outdoors while protecting it. They fit Southern Utah well, where desert soil, water and rock art are all easily damaged.
Plan Ahead And Prepare
Check the weather, know the rules for the area and bring enough water, food and layers.
Travel And Camp On Durable Surfaces
Stick to established trails, slickrock and gravel washes. Desert soil crusts take decades to recover from a single footprint.
Dispose Of Waste Properly
Pack out all trash. Bury human waste in a small hole 6 to 8 inches deep, well away from water, or use a waste bag where required.
Leave What You Find
Do not take rocks, plants, artifacts or fossils, and do not touch rock art.
Minimize Campfire Impacts
Use existing fire rings where fires are allowed, and check for fire restrictions first.
Respect Wildlife
Watch from a distance and never feed animals. This includes the desert tortoise, which is protected.
Be Considerate Of Other Visitors
Share the trail and keep the outdoors peaceful for everyone.
